Super Arrow

Submissions are now open, courtesy Submittable (formerly Submishmash)!

PLEASE BE ADVISED: We are no longer accepting submissions by e-mail.

Read our guidelines below and then submit your work here.

NOTE: General Submissions and Assignment Submissions are in different categories.

The assignment for the Issue No. 6 folio will be announced in early 2012.

General Guidelines

We accept simultaneous submissions; please withdraw your submission as soon as possible if your work is accepted elsewhere.

We do not accept previously published work. Work will be considered previously published if found in print or elsewhere on the web, including social networking sites and personal blogs. Visual art is an exception to this rule, but must not have appeared in a print or online publication prior to submission.

Regarding Response Times

Response times will vary, although our aim is always to respect our submitters by getting back to them as quickly and thoughtfully as possible. That being said, we are the smallest of outfits; at times our speed is restricted by our meager (but enthusiastic) manpower. After a period of 60 days, you're welcome to e-mail us to inquire about the status of your submission.

Specifications

Cover letters are not necessary, but we always like to hear what you think about the publication, as well as thoughts about your own process. Bios are interesting, but previous publications and experience will not have any sort of bearing on whether or not a piece is accepted.

When submitting your file, please include a document header containing the title of the piece, your name, e-mail address, and a page number. If you are submitting multiple pieces of either poetry or brief prose, be sure to include a list of titles in a cover letter.

Fiction

When it comes to fiction, we'd like to see something really moving/jostling/crisp/TBD on the line level. Plot may be at times be superceded by sincerity in conceptual pursuits, but oh do we love a good story too. Play it fast and loose or flying high or wrapped in tight, shiny packages with sharp corners.

Something under 8,000 words sounds about right, but ten words a pop is fine by us too. If it's a short story, please send one and then sit on your hands until you hear from us. Then you're free to send another. If you're sending flash fiction, send up to seven pieces at a time, in a single submission file.

Creative Nonfiction

We're in the market for formally exciting escapades in memoir, personal essay, literary journalism, food writing, nature writing, sports writing…anything really, so long as it's true. But look to make sure that your form is in conversation with your content, that your medium matches (or clashes with) your message in goose-bump or throat-click or lose-breath manner.

Like our fictioneers, please keep your submission to 8,000 words or less, and one submission at a time. If the submission is shorter pieces, keep it to seven in a single file.

Poetry

We like all sorts, but are less inclined toward work in traditional forms if they appear to be aggressively innocent of the modern and contemporary tradition in total. Again, check past issues, and see what we've published before. Then send us what you've got.

Please send us no more than seven poems at a time; please send us your entire submission in a single file.

Art

In the past, we've published drawings, paintings, collage, photography and documentary of installation work. We're pleased to accept such creatures, as well as audio and/or video and/or something we've not yet thought of.

Please send your work in a reasonably sized jpg, gif of TIFF file in something above 400 dpi., or an mp3/swf if it's sound, or a swf/mov if it's video. If you're unsure of the appropriate mode of file-communication, think about e-mailing us; we'll figure it out together.

Please address any questions to: editor(AT)superarrow.org.

A note on rights: upon acceptance and publication, the journal will hold first online rights for the work and maintain it as part of the journal's archive. Be advised that for many or most print publications, this will render the work published in Super Arrow "previously published." All other rights will remain that of the contributor; acknowledgment of a work's initial publication in the journal should accompany any future publications of the work.
